Beware Of This Scam
im not sure if im posting in wrong section, and i apologize if i did.
anyways, some guy tried to scam me today in a way i've never seen before, in Guild Wars OR in any other mmorpg. first, what the guy does is he finds a random rich looking person in the game. then he makes a new character and PMs you, saying something like "hey wasup, guess who?". and of course, a lot of people would start guessing names. and after a couple guesses, the guy goes "oh how'd you guess?" or something along the lines of that. then after he tries to establish a friendly conversation, he pretends that he is that "friend" of yours, and he asks you for a couple plat to help him start his new character. and i'd assume some people, thinking that they know this guy, would lend him a couple plat. i think this is a pathetic and low way to make money in the game, and these people should go to hell.
anyways, i jsut thought i'd warn people in case they run into people like this. and no I didnt get scammed ;], because the first person i guessed was my best friend who happens to be WAY richer than me, which means that he would never ask me for gold.
T___T please dont flame if this is wrong section

If the guy is such a good friend, he should be on your friends list, and show you the name of the character he is playing. I know I always check the friends list first when I get random crap sent to me.

Someone tried this on my EQ character a while back. I replied "I have no idea who you are." Never heard from him again.

Well, you'd have to be stupid to fall for it. If they're not on your friend's list, then obviously he's a liar.

This isn't always true, since your friend might've just gotten a new account and didn't tell you about it.

Yeah well there's always "this is a new character on my second account" to answer for that. Of course for someone who's smart enough there's other ways to tell.

The easiest way to counter this one is to always ask a question only the real friend of yours can possibly answer. This works even if the person is not on your friends list or made a second account.

I woudn't fall for it because I know who my friends are. I'd like to play along with it though, waste their time, have a laugh .

Typically I remember how I met a particular friend, so it's easy for me to start up a conversation with them. A scammer couldn't dupe that unless they were *really* good...

When i get these apparent random whispers i tell them i don't know who they are or worse if i'm in a bad mood.
I had one a few days ago saying "Hey wassup". All my friends we're offline so i just told them to leave me alone.
Thanks for the heads up.
